On Friday 20 January 2017, a vehicle struck a number of pedestrians in the vicinity of Bourke and Queen Streets just before 2:00pm. The car travelled from Flinders Street, up Swanston Street to Bourke Street Mall where the incident concluded at the corner of Bourke and William Streets.
VCC Emergencies Ministry Chaplains and Personal Support Workers were activated almost immediately and teams were on the ground supporting the community in their grief, sadness, confusion and deep shock.
Our volunteers were on site everyday from the 20th January to the 31st January. They attended the Vigil at Federation Square and supported the removal of the floral tribute on Tuesday 31st January along with other emergency service agencies.
VCC Emergencies Ministry supported 3321 affected persons, deployed 162 individual personnel and conducted 311 days of service. A huge effort, and one that was acknowledged from the Prime Minister to the Victorian Premier, Lord Mayor of Melbourne and Emergency Management Commissioner.
