On International Women’s Day on March 8, the Emergency Services Foundation invited VCC EM volunteers to take part in an afternoon tea forum involving women from across the state’s emergency services sector.

The afternoon began with a sumptuous tea enjoyed by eight of our amazing volunteers. This was followed by a forum with outstanding speakers, the Governor of Victoria the Hon Linda Dessau AC, Beyond Blue director Joanna Griggs and author Carol Fox.

In preparation for this event, I was privileged to be invited to be part of a media release featuring women in emergency services. It was an opportunity to meet some amazing women and to hear their experiences in serving the community.

The media release was played as part of the pre-game entertainment for the T20 Women’s World Cup cricket final. Being one of tens of thousands of spectators at the MCG was enthralling. Katy Perry’s pre-game performance certainly set the mood for the evening.

The Australian team were a delight to watch, the Indian team played some good cricket and the crowd response was united and electric – even as the Mexican wave continued.

The entire day was a fantastic experience and we were privileged to enjoy one of the last public events in Melbourne – and what an event it was!
